Artist's Statement:
In all of my work, I strive to create pieces that are exemplary of life energy and individual imagination. Although subjects and concepts evolve with interest, I am most intrigued by the relationship between social aesthetics and human frailties. A recurring theme in my paintings is the visual formation of the universe and night club environments. To me, both of these \'happenings\' spawn a plethora of emotions, concepts, cognitions and formulations. We are like the paint. Comparatively, envision a splatter of contrasting color that intrudes on an agreeable hue, while frenetic brush strokes and violent knife scrapings underlie or topple layers of subdued space and surface texture. Imagining the way the cosmos was created makes each design more definitive and spiritual to me. I prefer the surreal to the disdainful familiarities of reality. Unfortunately, reality must be accepted. It is an unavoidable rabid beast with vindictive claws, oppressive fangs, and a flesh woven collar engraved with domestic epitaphs, such as denial of culture, lack of self esteem and genocide. Creativity must flow
from heart to mind to hand to brush. Most recently, my art is composed of variously interacting areas of field, ground and fragmented figural imagery. Mixed media acrylics combined with collage assemblages, poems, found objects and anything I get my hands on, are my palette\'s choice. It broadens the gambit of approaches from speed and instinctive improvisation to methodical premeditation. Influences are Abstract Expressionism, Abstract Surrealism, Futurism and Pop Art; style is incidental to the message.
Artist's Bio:
A conceptualist and student of design, Christian is a native of New Orleans,
Louisiana and is now residing in Houston, Texas. He attended De La Salle
High School and later studied Advertising Art and English, at Prairie View
A&M University. Although receiving a degree in a more computer related field
of art, fine art has always been the artist’s true passion.
While in college, he studied painting and design under Rev. Dr. Clarence
Talley. It is here that the artist’s earlier works, which predominantly
entailed pen and ink, pencil renderings and collages, would become a
continuing exploration of color, emotion and individual imagination.
Christian’s art has been used as booklet designs for award programs, cd
album covers, private home decor and office building installations. He has
designed sets, backdrops for schools and book covers for authors.
