Artist's Statement:
In my paintings, drawings, and sculptures are shapes, forms, and patterns. They are metaphors for the stories and histories over time. By incorporating a sense of history into my work, I have begun to learn more about the importance of how each story is connected. The actual subject is somewhat arbitrary. I choose them for symbolic purposes. It is the idea of how all the elements relate to one another. Beyond the patterns, lines can be seen that represent space between a beginning and an end. It is as if the line brings every part together to make them whole.
Artist's Bio:
I grew up in Texas, and currently have my studio in Houston. In the summer of 1996, I worked at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston for a traveling exhibit. After the exposure to a variety of paintings and sculptures, I decided to begin painting various subjects. At this time, I also became involved with theatre and worked in several productions. While living in Austin, I produced a series of face paintings and held my first solo show. Several years later, I was introduced to the Sicardi Gallery of Contemporary Art. In addition to assisting family and friends at the gallery, I have considered this space to be another school for my development. Several of the gallery artists have influenced my work in one way or another. From 2003-2004, I studied art at the University of Houston in their BFA program. I have had the opportunity to visit some wonderful places and look forward to learning and discovering many others. This July I attended the Kansas City Art Institute to study surface design. I participated in a group exhibition at the Arts Space Gallery in Kansas City. Presently, I am showing my Untitled wheel sculpture at the 2006 Lawndale Art Center Big Show in Houston. This mixed media piece is representative of more recent work that incorporates elements of Shape, Form, Line, and Patterns.
