Artist's Statement:

Both my paintings and sculptures begin with distortions and irregularities found in nature.

I begin a painting by studying the grain lines on a wood panel. When I am patient and open, these marks begin to tell a story. I find the most interesting images when I relax and take my time looking and turning the work around.

After I have "found" the initial image, I try to remain open as I paint, resisting the temptation to answer too many questions early in the process. This way I allow the work to speak, creating an essential dialogue keeping me constantly engaged.

The sculptural process for me is very similar. I have collected many rocks, shells, and miscellaneous debris during my travels to other countries. Through trial and error, I slowly begin to "reassemble" fantastical creatures that seem to be scattered across my work space like a disassembled puzzle.

The resulting images speak of a beauty found in the distortion of the figure. They celebrate the irregularities in nature that make us unique and interesting.
