Angela Maxwell

Artist's Statement:

I paint cool stuff and sentimental stuff. I?ll choose an adventure or stillness. Desire and awkward disappointment. Complacency, mischievousness or a misunderstanding.

Most recently, I create characters that represent a part of who I am, and who the viewer is. Or who we want to be. If I paint characters that are at odds, I am encouraging the viewer to take a side. Be strong and courageous, or be weak and misunderstood. Be the victor or the victim, depending on what you bring to the painting. And, the best part is, we can act out these roles, these emotions, without having to commit to the part, because tomorrow we might find ourselves on the other side.

Hopefully, while the viewer is being entertained, they are also asking questions. What does this scenario mean? How does the situation end? My goal is to arouse curiosity without being overly ambiguous. Like a good book, the paintings can be interpreted on various levels, depending on the reader. For one person, the painting may simply be fun to look at. For another, the artwork offers insight into relationships and behavior. I strive to make compellingly goofy art that allows itself to be continually invested with new meaning.
