Artist's Bio:
Texas native Kellye Sanford has been a professional artist for more than twenty years.
Since earning a degree in fine art from Sam Houston State University, she has developed diverse skills working in a range of media, from painting, printmaking and sculpture, to photography, digital imagery and book arts. Her work has appeared on television and billboards, and in newspapers, magazines and books, and has been exhibited in gallery, museum and university settings in Texas as well as other states.
Sanford knows how to put her fine art skills to work in a business environment, and brings diverse abilities together to produce award-winning publication design and illustration.
Her work in book design provides an opportunity to unite her drawings, paintings and photographs with her love of the written word. She produces a steady stream of book jackets and complete book designs for a number of university presses, including SMU Press, Texas Review Press, Louisiana Literature and Bluestem Press.
She began working with the Houston Chronicle as an editorial designer and illustrator in 1988. Her illustration work there has concentrated on mixed-media sculpture, digital composite illustrations, and photo styling. Projects with the paper have included work on every regularly appearing section of the paper and numerous special reports, covering subjects ranging from advances in gene therapy to use of food as a weapon of war.
She has received awards from the international Society of News Design, International Newspaper and Marketing Executives, National Associated Press Sports Editors Association, Texas Associated Press Managing Editors, Hearst Newspapers, Press Club of Dallas, Press Club of Houston and others.
Sanford led the design team producing the Houston Chronicle's CowParade Houston entry, the Chronicow, which featured historic newspapers from the last 100 years and contained a working newspaper rack dispensing a commemorative edition of the paper.
She is a member of Texas Fine Art Association, Art League Houston, Lawndale, DiverseWorks, and is a board member of Women in the Visual and Literary Arts (WIVLA).
